Background

A legacy of the 1995 Western Canada Summer Games
, PacificSport Fraser Valley was created specifically to serve the athletes, coaches, officials and volunteers of British Columbia’s Fraser Valley. By providing a variety of innovative services and programs, the centre helps athletes progress while introducing sport opportunities to the region’s youth.

Currently meeting the needs of more than 120 registered athletes, coaches and officials, the Abbotsford-based centre, located at the University College of the Fraser Valley (UCFV), services
eight member sports and is connected to a network of eight PacificSport centres across the province.

A not-for-profit organization funded by investments from various partnerships, including the Province of BC, PacificSport Fraser Valley’s success is attributed to the excellent training facilities, paid coaching staff, strong relationships with local and provincial sport organizations and exemplary volunteers.  Together we are partners in Powering Sport Performance.

In the lead up to the 2010 Games, we will continue to work with our sport partners, 2010 LegaciesNow, Spirit of BC Community Committees and our own community to ensure a strong representation of BC athletes on national teams and ensure we are among the healthiest provinces to ever host an Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Hanna Barton has a recreational sport background with a particular fondness for curling which was cultivated during her husband’s years of competitive curling. Now that her kids are getting older, she hopes to start curling again on a mixed-couples team. Recognizing that the Operation Red Nose program in Abbotsford/Mission was a PacificSport initiative, Hanna chose to become involved as a way to give back to her community.

Hanna is a Certified General Accountant with her own practice in Abbotsford and 27 years of experience in public practice. She is a member of the Valley Women’s Network and is also the Treasurer for the Abbotsford Spirit of BC group.

UCFV

Past President

Joanne Houghton came to Canada from Australia where she benefited from an enviable half day per week dedicated to sport and physical activity. As a Canadian, she has committed her energies to speed skating. She is the Branch Manager of a growing TD Canada Trust Retail Branch in Abbotsford and is a Mutual Funds Registered Representative and Branch Compliance Officer. Her other volunteer commitments include Chair, PacificSport Fraser Valley, President of the Ridge Meadows Racers and Matsqui Blades Speed Skating Clubs, and Committee Advisor on the Fraser Valley Cancer Clinic’s  Breast Cancer Advocacy Committee.

Todd Marshall’s favourite sports are hockey, golf and cycling. He played Major Junior hockey and later coached recreational hockey at the municipal level. As a Chiropractor who specializes in sports injuries, Todd treats many top athletes, both professional and amateur, and has worked with Wrestling BC, Gymnastics BC and Athletics Canada as a sports medicine practitioner. Todd sees his involvement with PacificSport as an ideal opportunity to interact with high performance athletes and help them achieve their goals.

Todd is a graduate of Palmer College of Chiropractic West: Doctor of Chiropractic, 1999; magna cum laude and is also a resident of the College of Chiropractic Sports Sciences of Canada.
