King making Olympic waves Savannah King isn't even old enough to drive yet, but when it comes to the pool, she's cruising in the fast lane. King, who turns 16 in June, qualified for the Beijing Olympics in the 400- metre freestyle in four minutes and 10.28 seconds at the Canadian Olympic Trials in Montreal. King grew up in Vernon and began swimming in the grassroots program with coach Bruce Melton and started competing with the Vernon Kokanees Swim Club at age 12. ( more... )
Up and coming athletes given a helping hand Summerland freestyle skier Kristi Richards knows how tough it can be to try and get to the highest levels of amateur sport. Over the past several years, Richards, a women's moguls competitor on Canada's national freestyle ski team, has been near the top of amateur athletics, competing in the 2006 Olympics and looking like a medal contender for 2010. Deidra Dionne has defied the odds and is back competing at the World Cup level after breaking her neck while training in 2005 Freestyle aerialist Deidra Dionne, who broke her neck jumping just five months before the 2006 Olympics, has returned to competition without any fanfare -- exactly as she planned.
